Q. I have a R/O under counter filter system with 3MROM413 cartridge and 2 other cartridges. There is writing in it that says it was installed in 2019 but the water is still coming out and tastes fine. If I am getting water why do I need to change the cartridges. Wouldn’t they get clogged up and stop working? Wouldn’t that be when I need to change them?
A. Filters "catch" polutants and impurities and holds them in the filter until the filter is changed. During use these impurities accumulate. Once the filter is fully saturated with impurities it may start "dumping" the impurities that has built up and excedded its capacity. A second reason is that bacteria can grow in th efilter media. So all filter other than the RO membrane need to be changed at least once per year. High usuage will require more frequent filter changes. Normally, sediment pre filters need to be changed twice as often as the following carbon filters. RO membranes need changed when the TDS drops below 80% rejection. This can be tested with a TDS tester as shown at TDS Meter - Test For Total Dissolved Solids In Water - Reverse Osmosis Membrane Tester - TDS Meter
